INFORMATION FOR PROSPECTIVE AFFILIATES

The WA Horticultural Council is made up of delegates representing the majority of non-commercial horticultural bodies based in WA. In effect, the Council is the collective voice of these bodies.

Our primary objectives are to:

  • promote, encourage and assist the development of non-commercial horticulture within the State of Western Australia, and
  • promote, encourage and assist the formation of horticultural bodies and their affiliation with Council.
We achieve our aims by:
  • providing advice and guidelines on conducting shows, including the drafting of show schedules and regulations
  • authorising affiliates to conduct State and District Championships and other awards and ratifying the appointment of judges officiating at such events.
  • approving and maintaining a register of general and specialist horticultural judges
  • conducting horticultural seminars and general judges courses
  • establishing a panel of guest speakers whose services are available to affiliates, and,
  • providing affiliates with advice on such other horticultural matters as may be required from time to time.
Membership of Council offers affiliates:
  • the right to participate in the decision making process through their delegates
  • copies of Council minutes of meetings
  • a quarterly news sheet called "Garden Cuttings" which outlines coming events and other relevant horticultural news
  • networking opportunities with other horticulturally minded persons
  • the opportunity to provide input to Council's Standards and Classifications of genera published in the West Australian Gardener's Handbook (refer Sales)
  • printed result slips for use at shows, and
  • the opportunity to join in organised social events.

All this for an annual membership of $33 (due 1 January each year).

Organisations seeking affiliation are asked to apply in writing enclosing a copy of their Constitution, if they have one, or generally agreeing to objectives that are broadly in accord with those of Council, as outlined above.   The Department of Consumer and Employment Protection offers a free information service that includes copies of draft constitutions, running an incorporated association, etc. They are at Forrest Centre, 219 St George's Terrace, Perth WA 6000 or telephone: (08) 9282 0777, www.docep.wa.gov.au. e-mail: online@docep.wa.gov.au
